Volunteers To Be Paid Expenses

18th January 2009

Council this week voted in favour of paying its volunteers travelling expenses when they come along to help at an event, or volunteer to help out at Sulgrave. The expenses are paid at 15p per mile within a 25 mile radius of the event/location.

Our volunteers still qualify for free entry tickets to shows such as Gardeners World Live and RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park and also gain free entry to Herb Society run events that they volunteer to help at. Keep an eye on our Diary page and if an event is happening in your local area and you'd like to volunteer, then get in touch with our Events Organiser Jenny Jones via Flick our admin.

Obituary Thomas Bartram (1913 - 2009)

10th January 2009

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Bartram, a former council member of the society back when we were known as the Society of Herbalists. Thomas was the founder of the popular Grace magazine, died at the age of 96. Mr Bartram, a consulting medical herbalist, died at his home in Boscombe on Wednesday 7th January.

He was best known for his book The Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, which was his life’s work and took him 10 years to compile. After 17 years’ service, Mr Bartram gave up his hospital career for alternative medicine. For over 35 years he was in professional private practice as a consulting medical herbalist. He served as a council member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and of the Society of Herbalists. In 1958, he founded Gerard House, the internationally-known innovators of herbal medicine.

Website Changes Coming In 2009

1st January 2009

Happy 2009 to everyone from all of us on Council, here's to a bigger, better year for all of us! Last year flew by so quickly, hard to believe its now a year since I became the Herb Society's webmistress. I do hope everyone is happy with the development of the site and the progress made so far? 2008 saw a few changes to the site, such as the ability to pay your subscription via paypal and the launch of our online shop.

In early 2009 our website will move servers, keep an eye out for the start of the changes in early Spring. Shortly after the move we'll have a fully working members only area. You'll need a password to access this area, don't worry, we'll let you know how to get it at and how to use it. Our schools website will also be
re-launched in late Spring, and in the Summer we'll be sending out an electronic newsletter to members in-between the quarterly issues of 'Herbs'. 2009 is set to offer more benefits to members, making it even more worthwhile to be a member of the Society, so if you're not already a member why not join us?

Happy New Year
