Herb Fact Sheets

Letter from Nick

Hello boys and girls!

My name is Nick. I want to tell you about herbs.

Well, what are herbs?  Herbs are plants that we can grow in our gardens.  Herbs are useful plants.  We use them in lots of ways.  Here are some ways:

  • We use them in cooking.
  • We use them in medicines to make us feel better when we are sick.
  • We use them to make us smell nice!
  • We use them to keep away nasty smells.
  • We use them to keep away bugs.

If you look in your kitchen you may find some herbs. Ask your mum or dad to show what is there.

Perhaps you have a herb growing in your kitchen? What is its name?

Sometimes we add them to food to give it flavour. Sometimes they are added to the food we buy in the supermarket.

Next time you go shopping, look on the food packets. Are herbs added to the food? What are they?

If you look in the bathroom, you may find herbs in the shampoo. What other bottles and jars have herbs in them?

Here are a few herbs that you may find in your kitchen and bathroom:

  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Lavender

I know you will be able to find more herbs. Look in your home and in your garden.

Enjoy yourselves.

Nick
